Stepping into the world of real manufacturing can be daunting, but for many interns, it’s a transformative experience that shapes their careers. My time at Hexagon Machine was nothing short of eye-opening. Having been part of robotics teams since the 4th grade, ranging from Lego Robotics to the First Tech Challenge and First Robotics Challenge—I was eager to learn how to operate complex machinery in real time. This experience taught me the importance of precision and teamwork while working alongside professionals, and the lessons I gained are invaluable.

During my internship, I quickly adapted to running multiple machines and switching between different tasks. I learned how to clean and deep-clean tools and products to ensure they were ready for customer shipment. Each step of the process emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards, as these products would eventually be used by clients who rely on Hexagon’s precision and quality.

Julian was instrumental in my training. He patiently guided me through the operation of various machines, taught me how to offset tools, and consistently assigned tasks that challenged my abilities. His support made the steep learning curve much more manageable.

One standout aspect of Hexagon Machine was its supportive culture. Neil was always available to clarify doubts or provide assistance whenever I faced challenges. Similarly, Ralph, who worked up front, ensured that all parts meet tight tolerances. He took the time to teach me how to measure parts accurately, a critical skill in this industry. Doug, the CEO, demonstrated understanding and compassion, especially when I needed to take time off. Having such an empathetic work environment made it easier to stay focused and committed.

During my internship, I experienced a minor accident involving a piece of thin material. It was a pivotal moment that highlighted the importance of safety in manufacturing. After the incident, I immediately reported it to my supervisor, who calmly guided me on the next steps, cleaned the wound, and took me straight to the hospital. This experience reinforced the necessity for vigilance when handling heavy machinery and showcased the company’s commitment to employee well-being. Since then, I have become more mindful of safety precautions and the protocols required to prevent such accidents.

Reflections and Growth

My time at Hexagon Machine taught me more than just technical skills; it illustrated the importance of teamwork, attention to detail, and resilience. Whether it was Julian’s consistent mentorship, Neil’s unwavering support, Ralph’s precision-focused guidance, or Doug’s understanding nature, every team member contributed to my growth.

Interning at Hexagon Machine was a journey of learning and self-discovery. The skills and values I gained will undoubtedly shape my professional path for years to come. For anyone considering an internship at Hexagon, be prepared to work hard, learn extensively, and be part of a team that genuinely cares about your success.
